French Tarragon - some questions

Hello all,

I lost my 3 year old French Tarragon plant this year and purchased another from a local farm center (tasted it first). I have been reading about how Tarragon strangles itself (the roots) and thus must be divided every few years to keep a patch growing. I grow my Tarragon in a large container.

Is there any soil additive which will make the soil really loose and perhaps keep the Tarragon alive a bit longer?? I am thinking about adding perlite and PermaTill (mini rocks) to the new container to keep the growing medium nice and 'loose'.

If this is not recommended -- when should I take cuttings and start new Tarragon this year? The real Tarragon is getting harder and harder to find locally and the price is going higher each year. Many garden centers around here label the plants as French - but when I tasted those plants I did not get that certain 'zing'.
