My lemon thyme is spent

I've had lemon thyme in my yard in this one spot for two years and I think it has just about run its course. I didn't know they were so short lived. Two thoughts--replace it with another thyme, but maybe they are all short lived, or take the last bits of life in the plant and root them to make a new one. It's too little for layering, plus it's in a tight space and layering implies shifting the location a bit.

So, can I just take cuttings, dip them in rooting solution, put them in some little pots with potting soil, water and get some babies?

Is there a hardier thyme? I love the scent, but what I most like for my yard is the color of the leaves and the contrasting cream and lime green.
