mint as understory/groundcover?

I have some very large raised planters with attached benches that I am going to plant some hydrangea paniculata in - they are in full sun and about 2' x 4' each, and about 4' deep.

I would like to plant some mint as an understory/groundcover plant under the hydrangea, as it will be contained and at ideal smelling height :)

Is this a good idea or no? I know mint can be very invasive (hence the contained planters), but I would think the hydrangea would hold up to the mint. It would be a combo of chocolate mint and sweet mint.

Also, if I decide to go with spring bulbs rather than hydrangea, will they grow through the mint okay?

Thanks!
