Basil plants leggy & limp

I planted about 4 basil plants in late May in a long, deep teak planter. They started out beautifully -- growing large, deep green leaves. Over a two week period, I harvested approx. 6 cups of basil. Since then, I have pinched off any tops that look like they are starting to go to seed. Now they are starting to look long, leggy & the bottom leaves a quite limp. They don't seem to be getting bushy and I thought they would after harvesting some. Also, the bottom of some of the main stems are starting to brown. I was thinking of cutting them down about 1/3, but I wonder if they are already stressed. They are on my deck getting full sun, and I water just about every day. Can anyone help me save them??? Thanks
