I have clay soil as well. I don't find it too tough to deal with. I just use a garden spade to lift up whatever is too unruly and give it away to someone who wants oregano. :)

The trick with clay is to do work like that after having good, soaking rains. The soil softens and you can do what garden tasks you need. If it is dry and hard, best to do those tasks at a later date...a moister date.

Ours is rapidly taking over the entire west garden bed, so we clip it back around the chilis and ignore it. I treat it like a cover crop.

BTW, bees are nuts over the blossoms, as are hummingbirds, and various small birds eat the seeds and seedpods, so it's a good part of the garden ecosystem.

Hmm... I must be doing something wrong. My oregano is very well behaved. It hasn't spread at all. Grows great but doesn't spread for me.

The "invasiveness" of some plants is very condition and location dependent. I've never had mint go wild. It has always been rather well-behaved here. Go figure.

My oregano seems to spread aggressively where there is moist soil, then stop. My mint however, seems to be able to tunnel through hard clay and then clump where it's freed from the clay.
