Downy Mildew on Basil / Replanting in same soil?

xeno

My basil plants keep getting wiped out in my garden from downy mildew, while other plants (sometimes even in the same spot) seem to be immune. I recently planted a new basil plant in a pot with tomato, and it quickly succumbed to downy mildew. I live in a really hot and dry climate, so I think that overwatering was the cause of the basil getting infected. Luckily, not other plants in the planter seem to have gotten infected, but I wanted to know if it's possible to replant another type of plant where the infected basil was. Some of the readings I've done about downy mildew say that the soil will also be infected with spores, but has anyone here had experience with it?
