Basil plants - advice

I'm growing a couple of basil plants in some terracotta pots on my apartment balcony. It's my first time ever growing anything. So far they have been doing pretty good, but there are a couple things that have me worried and I wanted to get some advice.

Here is a picture of my basil plants:

They are in 8" pots. The shorter plant is about the height of my forearm, and the taller plant maybe 3 or 4 inches taller than that.

There is some browning on the main stems of both, but mostly the shorter plant, which has me a bit worried. Also, the lower leaves on the shorter plant look a bit droopy. Although I've heard you normally water basil plants every other day, I am watering the plants every day, mainly because they are in the Texas sun and it gets hot here. A neighbor suggested I pull them back out of the sun a little bit to see if that helps the droopyness of the leaves.

What do yall think? Any suggestions on the basil plants? Are they too tall, and should I cut them shorter?

Thanks for any advice!
