Does anyone know if lavender is good in zone 4 with a touch of zone 3 some days. I have 3 new plants and I am just wondering if I should put them in my garage for the winter so I don't lose them. I am worried because a friend of mine said she tried last year but they died-but she lives in the middle of a field I live in town- I have plants that are of decent size I do not know what she started them at. I was also wondering what other scented herbs I could grow in my garden. Would variegated lemon thyme last in my zone?

There are many varieties of Lavender - the ones named Hidcote and Munstead are the hardiest. Munstead winters for me in my garden. One of the tricks to Lavender is providing really excellent drainage as well as a full sun location. Anywhere where the water pools after a rain or when the snow is melting is bad. Sandy, rocky soil where water drains fast is good. A rock/sand/gravel mulch is good. Lavender does not like a location where you'll always be watering. Do not cut it back in the fall and do not cut back the dead stuff in spring until you see where the new growth is coming from on the old wood. If your garage is not heated then chances are your potted lavender will die over winter. Lemon thyme should winter for you - again, well draining soil in full sun. Thyme doesn't like a lot of water, either.

I put a lot of Hidcote lavender in the garden this year, mainly to keep the deer away from my roses. It's supposed to be hardy to zone 4 and I hope it makes it through the winter. I really like it and it's done great so far. I put it by the roses and I'm sure I watered it too much, but it seems very happy!

I'm in zone 3 and bought 3 Munstead lavender plants about 5-6 years ago. Two succumbed in the first 2 years but one is still doing fine. I don't do anything special with it altho it gets lots of snow cover. My soil is not the best for lavender, amended clay, but it's on a slight slope so the drainage is good. I'd be reluctant to over-winter lavender in a garage, I've lost too many plants over the years trying that. Maybe mulch with dry leaves.

I grow herbs and winter hardy cacti in my zone 5 garden. The ones performing the best are planted in a 2-3 foot brick retaining wall and have full sun with lots of sand, rocks, and pebbles in the soil mix. I have a lavender growing next to lambs ears, sedums, semperviums, and opuntia cacti...and they thrive. Do not mulch with leaves since that will hold in moisture; if anything, place some small rocks around the plant, remove mulch, and add some sand (cacti potting mix would work), gently pull the plant up and get it above the soil line if drainage is an issue. Leave the dead twigs over winter and cut it back
