herbs as perennials

Hello, I live in the Kansas City area (zone 6 now but winters can be harsh) and just read that sage, oregano and thyme can be perennial in my area. It never occured to me before, I've always done them as annuals in containers, with quite alot of success. I have a small corner bed (triangular, about 3 feet on a side) that is between a concrete porch and the house, it was new this year and nothing survived in it. It's VERY hot and sunny in the summer, protected in the winter and easily watered. My herbs are currently in big strawberry planters on the concrete porch and I'm wondering if I translant them into this bed soon, to give their roots time to get established, would they be likely to come back next year? Would I be better off starting next spring with fresh plants? Are there other herbs that might also be perennial here that you would recommend? Anyone think a rosemary would survive winters in zone 6 (I wish I wish I wish)?
