For fall harvests or for next spring? I'm assuming fall harvests. When is the first frost date for your location?

I would like to get some fall harvests, but I assume the herbs will overwinter as well. The average first frost date for our area is about Nov. 5. Thanks.

Ok. Look up each herb you wish to plant. Cilantro, for example has: Days to Maturity:40-60 days. This is the maturity dates for leaf, not seed. Count backwards 60 days from Nov. 5, approximately Labor Day. Plant some now. Plant some in 2 weeks.

Figure out the rest like that. Hopefully your frosts come late rather than early to stretch out your season. Cover as needed for odd bitter nights.

Thanks, FataMorgana. Actually, frosts have never harmed my herbs like cilantro and chervil. I was just concerned that warm temperatures right now might make the seeds shoot up too rapidly and bolt quickly. I know that a lot of herbs like cooler temperatures to start off with.

I think I'll experiment as you said and stagger the sowings.

Cold temperatures can slow a lot of growth and production down and you can get that before the first frosts - of course my experiences in the frozen north will be different than yours in GA. But it is a bit of a guessing game and so some people keep journals for their gardens to help them better plan in future years.

Staggered sowings is recommended for short-season stuff like lettuce, cilantro, radishes, and so on. You can keep your supply more constant. Glad to help.
