Growth on Basil Plant

Posted by gsmphoto Houston, TX (My Page) on

I was harvesting some of my basil to make pesto and came across this scary looking growth. Looks like worms, but they are not mobile, i.e. they do not move. I went to a garden center and nobody there could ID this. Their resident expert is out until Wednesday. Any help is appreciated. Needless to say, I removed this plant from the garden.

RE: Growth on Basil Plant

Those are adventitious roots. Basil roots very easily from the stems and yours has just gone into overdrive. Maybe it is in a very damp atmosphere. It is not diseased and there was no need to discard it.

I place my harvested basil shoots in glasses of water on the kitchen counter. Roots appear in a few days and the leaves are healthy for a long time.
