Lavender and Mulching

I just planted six gorgeous English Lavender plants in full sun. I was reluctant to use mulch after hearing that certain kinds can cause root rot. However, I started covering the area around the plants with rocks (some large, some small) found in my yard (it's a very rocky area) for aesthetics and to keep out weeds. Now I am unsure of whether the rocks are going to trap too much moisture. I was originally planning on using bark mulch, but I'm not sure if that would be worse than the rocks. I've heard sand mulch is good for lavender, but does anyone know if rocks would be ok? I left some space around the base of the plant, and there is of course some space in between the rocks.

I live in Southern California in an area that is not considered humid, hardly gets any rain, and probably zone 9 or 10. The soil is a sandy loam. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.
