Rosemary: Plant or Overwinter?

I have a nice rosemary shrub that I bought in the spring. It's been happily growing in a large container all summer, and is currently about 2.5 feet tall and a foot or so wide. We just bought our first house and I'd like to plant it in the yard. Will I be able to plant that in late Sept/early Oct? If not, is there any way for me to overwinter that rosemary to plant in the spring?

ETA, this is for zone 6 where it'll be planted. Hadn't changed that before I posted.

Even with the hardiest variety "arp," it is going to be questionable if rosemary will survive at all for you. If you have the right microclimate, it is doable but I would suspect more chances of failure than success.
