| I saw someone mention orange balsam thyme (and lavender thyme) in another post , im very interested in these. I went to a couple of my normal seed buying web sites and they didnt carry them. I did find http://www.johnnyseeds.com/catalog/product.aspx?category=205&subcategory=282&item=2934 this. Is it the same thing? although I didnt find the Lavender thyme.
thank you

| I'm not familiar with those thyme varieties so someone else will have to comment on that. But some of my favorite herb seed/plant places to order from are: Richters http://www.richters.com Pinetree http://www.superseeds.com/ Johnny Seeds http://www.johnnyseeds.com/ Nichols http://www.nicholsgardennursery.com/ Territorial http://www.territorial-seed.com Stokes http://www.stokeseeds.com Horizon http://www.horizonherbs.com/ Select Seed http://www.selectseeds.com (An heirloom flower place but some herbs are "flowers" too!) Thompson & Morgan http://www.tmseeds.com (Their herb section lists only culinary herbs but many herbs are listed in other sections) Perhaps one of these places also carries the thyme varieties you are interested in. | Kris, Richter's has both orange balsalm and lavender thymes but as plants only - no seeds (just happened to have their catalogue right here). |

| Be aware that Richeter's ship small plants. However they are the only source for some herbs. Also when you see only plants and not seeds for a particular cultivar it means one of two things. 1. Can not be proprogated by seeds only cuttings. 2. That nursery or the nursery supplier has registered that cultivar. You will only be able to get seeds or plants from the particular nursery when they release to the public. |

| In addition to the great links posted above, for thyme plants try www.thymegarden.com Quite inexpensive! Lots of thyme varieties. Many thymes won't come true from seed so need to be vegetatively propogated (buy a plant). |

thanks so much for all the links and info. Im sorry it took me so long to come back, ive been re-finishing my kitchen cabinets. LOL I always have to much on the brain. The pictures on the Thyme Garden site are breath taking. I wish I had more space. It looks like that Richeter's is a Canadian company. would a plant make a long journey safely? |

| I've ordered from Richters for years. Over the years I've ordered roses, single plants, plug packs, and plug trays from them. They were packaged well and all the plants made it quite nicely. I believe their US orders ship from Buffalo, NY. I must admit to being a relatively short distance from Buffalo so the plants I get don't spend much time in transit. I think, however, the Richters plants were packaged better than some plants I have ordered from companies in Washington and Oregon State that made it to me quite nicely - cross-country is a very long transit time, relatively speaking. I wouldn't be worried about the shipping. FataMorgana |

| I think the thing with Thymes is that there are not as many species as there are "cultivars". A lot of the variants in scent are plants that someone noticed smelled different from others of its kind. Some of them are random mutations, and some of them are accidental hybrids that turn out with interesting or unique scents. A lot of Thymes are selected for looks, not scent, and the variegation is usually a "sport". Cultivars sometimes come true and sometimes not, but usually nursery propagators just propagate them vegetatively. "French Tarragon" of couse is a sterile hybrid so it can't be grown from seed. I have seen seed for a few Thymes, such as French Thyme (a fine-leaved, mellow culinary thyme) and German Thyme aka "Deutsche Winter", which is a bigger-leaved, potent, unusually hardy variety. Wow, that Thyme Garden Herb Shop has a lot of varieties! The problem is that some of them don't really smell like what they are named after, and some are not culinary, either been too small to easily harvest or almost scentless. I know Orange-Balsam Thyme, German Winter, what I think is Lemon Thyme (it came as "Lime Thyme", which I think is just variegated Lemon Thyme, but it is not variegated), Lavender Thyme, and Oregano Thyme--does anyone know what others are good culinary Thymes? I seem to recall once hearing that "Caraway Thyme" smells REALLY good, but I've never actually "met" the plant. |

| I have had really good experiences buying from both johnny seeds and eGardenSeed. eGardenSeed is a newer company and, if they dont yet carry what you want, they will find it for you. Once, they even found my friend ladyfinger grapevines and had them shipped right to her! |
