I haven't ever tried to grow saffron crocuses, I don't know why. I wonder if they'll grow here in our hot climate.

Calendulas are another that needs cooler weather... but then, maybe in the winter..... I think I'll try this year.

According to what I've read you should have no problem growing them where you're at. It may be too late this year but I'm going to grow some next year.

Well as it turns-out it's not too late this year so I just ordered (50) bulbs from White Flower Farm. This should be an interesting plant to grow, (and use).

I got some more saffron threads yesterday when I found some more flowers had opened. I've never really used saffron but the smell of the fresh threads was marvelous and may make me a true believer.

I got my crocus at the local lawn & garden center for much less than saffron is usually offered for in the specialty catalogs. The bulbs were labeled with botanical names and knowing the botanical name for saffron (Crocus Sativus) was key to getting that deal!

Calendula are terrific cooler weather plants. They will bloom here right up to the killing frost surviving all the minor frosts. The beets, carrots, various brassicas, and the calendula are usually the last green growing things every season in my veggie beds.
