Are the stems dark and soft(mushy), or firm(woody). If soft, they may have gotten too cold before you brought them in. If the stems are firm, they should be ok. A photo would be helpful. Yes, keep the soil on the drier side. They may not thrive inside, but you can keep them going until spring if the light is bright enough(treat them as houseplants). If they don't make it, basil is easy to start from seed...you can start it early indoors to get a jump on the season. Let us know how it goes.
