Definitely not Camellia sinensis, the tea plant (tree) we get "green tea" from. That has oblong, glossy leaves.

Is there any fragrance to the leaves or other characteristics that might help us to identify it?

Clearly not Camellia sinensis. I'd suggest that you contact the nursery from where you purchased the plant.

Could you post a closer picture of the stem to see how the leaves are attached?

Please be aware that plant sellers here are notorious for having no idea what they are selling and mis-lable and mis-name plants more often than they get it right. They almost never - and I mean never - know species of different plants, and a tomato is always just a tomato, for instance, never the variety.

Depending on where you are, there are some trustworthy people in Haifa, where I am, and if you have a car, you'll get there. There are lots of resources here, but they are hard to find. I would suggest not buying anything else at that one place! Peace, Batya
