Rosemary better in Shade?

Hi! When I used to live in NYC, I always had a Rosemary plant that ended up dry and spindly by the fall because it wouldn't get enough sun on my fire escape. I swore that I would one day have a sunny patch of garden to plant rosemary in and have it all the time.
Now, I do. I bought a plant in March but couldn't plant it until June (lots of travel). It got forgotten in a shady part of the garden behind the garage and did just fine. I found it and panicked about the sun deprivation and moved it to direct sunlight (8 hours in the summer) and it started to really suffer. That's when I decided to plant it back behind the garage. and it's doing well if not growing super large. (Still only about 8 inches tall).
Someone gifted me a two foot plant and now I have to decide where to plant it. Full sun is obviously the recommendation, but my experience makes me hesitate. Any light to shed on this mystery?
Thanks in advance!
