Two-coloured Hibiscus

Posted by Hegningen DK (My Page) on

I have had this Hibiscus for more than 6 years.
Three weeks ago it suddenly revealed this two-colored flower. Throughout all 6 years it has stayed light-orange/yellow coloured. A couple of months ago I placed another darker hibiscus beside it. That is the only explanation I can find. Is this normal behaviour for Hibiscus? A sudden mutation. It is only on one branch this fenomenon has occured. It continues producing the normal one-colour hibiscuc it alwas did on the other branches

I think it is a natural mutation in that one branch. Tag the branch and see if the flowers on that branch continue to do the same thing. If they do, you need to root some cuttings from that branch- you will have a new hibiscus variety on your hands. Absolutely wonderful!

It is absolutely stunning. It is a sport. The color has nothing to do with being planted next to another color. As previously advised, mark the limb. If it continues to bloom with the same color combo, contact the American Hibiscus Society about someone in your area who can help you root cuttings and how to introduce it into trade. I hope to see it in trade in a few years.

Hegningen back on the blog! Unfortunately this was a once-only event. The hibiscus only bloomed like this june 2003 and it has been normal ever since. the colour somewhere in between the two.
