How Old is Too Old?

I have 3 Hibiscus rosa-sinensis that are about 42 years old.

They get full sun on a gentle slope in my backyard. I've pruned them back about a third three times in the 10 years I've lived in the house. I live a block from the ocean and there is no irrigation to their area. Their appearance is underwhelming. Can they be rejuvinated? If they need deep feeding, which product is recommended? Or is it their time?

Thanks for the help.

Can you give some details about their appearance and what you would like to change?

It seems like they're just hanging on, and it may well be my fault. They're not very leafy, you can see a lot of trunk and branches. I would love to see a shrub all leafed out. I worry less about the blooms, though there are always a few. You know how you can tell when a plant is happy, well these guys look tired.
