hibiscus

Hi, i have just bought a place in Florida, west central (Seminole) and we have hibiscus. It does not look very healthy and has shown one bloom. Should they be pruned and if so, when? What about fertilizer? The soil here is very sandy. Also can anyone recommend plants for this zone. We are planning on spending approx four months a year here so need hardy plants that do not need a lot of attention.

Thanks

they can be trimed most of the year accept dead of winter and fertilized several times a year now would be a good time for both than i would mulch the hibiscus after they are fertilized. as for low maintenance not to much to choose from unless there will be someone triming them the times of the year you are not there. ligustrum, pitisporum and podacarpas are are low maintenance but they donot have showy flowers the ligustrum and pits do have variegated forms. there is for sure other plants but thats the few i know that are hardy and fairly low maintenance
