Rose of Sharon/Althea pruning question

Hi all--

(Newbie here)--I planted several of these last fall, and they are starting to show signs of life (yey!!), but the info tag that came with them says to prune in early spring. The plants still have the dead-heads from last year attached to the limbs; do I clip them off?

And does anyone have any advice as to how to prune?

    I was just about to post the same question. Mine is about six feet all and have started to leaf out - can I keep it that tall? Do I HAVE to cut it back and why would I cut it back when it is already leafing out? Thanks

    I just found this on the internet:

    Althea (Rose of Sharon) blooms on new wood (current season growth), so the best time to prune is in the early spring. If you prune now, you will lose any flowers, and reduce the amount of foliage available for photosynthesis. Rose of Sharon can be pruned hard in the spring, cutting it back to ground level. By rejuvenating the plant in this way, the size of the flowers should increase.
