Hibiscus cannabinus & acetasello - Edible?

Ralph Whisnant

Does anyone grow this plant for its edible leaves? It is apparently sold in the Asian markets here in the Raleigh, NC area as Gongura leaves and is reportedly very popular for frying as a vegetable in India. I have also read that H. acetasello leaves are eaten in Africa similar to sorrel. I am familiar with 'Red Shield' and 'Haight Ashbury' as ornamentals, but are there other H. acetasellos that would be a better source of edible leaves?

I don't know the variety name, but someone gave me cuttings of edible hibiscus today. It's gorgeous--deep green leaves to 12" long and wide on thick succulent reddish stems. She said it's really fast growing and needs to be cut back frequently (at least here on Kauai).
