hardy hibiscus

Each year, when several sets of leaves have grown on the hibiscus plant, a small green "worm" eats holes in the leaves. Any way to prevent this animal from eating on the plants? Does the animal described hatch from an egg that is laid on the leaf or does it crawl up the stem of the plant?
