inherited hibiscus, rose of sharon?

I don't know if the picture will post..this is my first time trying to post a picture. Sorry if the file size is to big...

I inherited this hibiscus when I bought my house. In doing research I think it is a rose of sharon (blueish purple blooms) The first summer it bloomed beautifully. Last summer not as much. The area was packed with other plants and I think it didn't get enough nutrients. I read to prune it in the fall so that is what I did, but now I'm reading that it should be pruned in the spring and I'm confused. Any help to ensure I take great care of this beauty would be much appreciated! Is it considered a tree or a shrub???

Large flowers may be obtained by pruning back hard to 2-3 buds in early spring. Otherwise, prune to shape.
