Black Scale

Does anyone know of a surefire non toxic method of getting black scale off my White hibiscus? It is one of my prize bushes. The poor thing is all retarded looking. The buds and flowers are all knotted up looking and won't open. They look like cotton balls! If not, which pesticide works best? Thank you for any replies.

This past weekend I discovered huge black scale on 2 of my albutilons. I didn't know that scale could get so big! The only treatment that I know of is what I do with my orchids that get the small brown scale, which is to take a Q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol and wipe them off. Since the albutilons are much larger than orchids that method would take forever. So I pruned them back hard and carefully drizzled the alcohol on each branch, then the scale scraped of easily with a pottery shard. I'm giving them lots of TLC and soil amendments hoping that they recover. It's still early in the season so I'm hopeful.

    Good luck,

    Andrea
