Hibiscus Survival Strategies

I love to get my wife Hibiscus plants for events like Mother's Day. But inevitably, they get bitten by the frost in my Zone 9 garden and die. Can I plant them in the garden, pot and all, and then lift them in the winter, stashing them in the garage or something? If so, should I cut back the root ball or put them in a larger container before planting the whole kit and kaboodle in the garden?
