Can I keep perennial hibiscuses in pots, inside?

The subject header really asks the question; I just bought two perennial hibiscuses yesterday (white rose of sharon; red luna) and I bought them with the intentions of putting them in pots and keeping them inside. I can put them outside but just thought that they would look nice indoors. Neighbour says that I can't/shouldn't & should plant them in the garden. Thoughts?

Youve got smart neighbors. ALL of the things that happen throughout the year outside are the very things your plants will need to stay healthy and flourish. Youre not going to be able to imitate that in the house. Tropicals make decent houseplants because you can mimic easier indoors what they need to grow.

There is a good reason why you dont see pines, oaks, and spruce sold as houseplants.
