Planting in Zone 7

Our local nursery has some very nice hibiscus in large pots. I would like to get some for my back deck and maybe a couple for color in my front beds. At what point would it be safe to move the plants from their pots to the ground, and are there special tips for doing this? I'm just starting to learn the ropes, and have a long way to go. But I do remember the house we used to rent having 5 or 6 of the pink/orange hibiscus and I just loved them. Thanks.

Pink/orange hibiscus are of the rosa-sinensis clan. They will NOT survive a zone 7 winter. They require zone 9b conditions or warmer to do well. Otherwise these must be brought in before frost if you wish to have them for next year. Don't despair, however. There are tropical and semi-tropical varieties that will likely grow well for you. You can try Hibiscus mutabilis varieties, and even Hibiscus cubensis, The Cuban Hibiscus. These should thrive in warmer zone 7 locations, especially with a good mulch.
