Starting rose of sharon

A friend wants to give me starts of ROS. Should the starts be dug up or should I take cuttings? If I use cuttings, how should they be started? I've never tried anything like this before and am a little nervous about how to proceed.

You can do either. Cuttings are easy to start. Just put some rooting hormone on the ends and stick in any well draining soil. They may lose some leaves, but root very readily, and will be growing in no time.
