hibiscus half healthy

Half of my hibiscus chinensis plant was dropping its leaves and I cut the woody branches down. The other half is healthy and making leaves and buds. The whole thing had bloomed beautifully outside all summer. What is going on? Should I repot and get rid of the part I cut back, or wait? I plan to bring it in for the winter. Thanks for any help.
