When to prune hibiscus?

Not sure what kind of hibiscus it is. It was here when we bought the house 5 years ago. Looks like a common variety. It's really gotten big and rubbing against the house. When is a good time to prune it? Seems to always be blooming so I'm not sure of the best time to do it. Thanks for your time and have a nice evening.

I pruned mine back about two feet, some off the sides after it was done flowering in the fall time last year. This year it had lot's of new growth (mostly up top) and it had loads of flowers this year!

Down here it seems pretty safe to do light pruning all year. when it gets colder, and the shrub starts dropping its leaves, you can cut back as much as you want. It will grow back.
