Inherited old tropical standards

We were given several tropical standard hibiscus, they are somewhat old having come from an estate on Fishers Island NY. Obviously they have been overwintered indoors, they are your basic red and a pink single blossom. References I have read say to prune back to within 4 inches of main trunk, stow in a cool basement, let them go dormant. Is this true for a mature standard too? These trees are 7 feet tall. They are pot bound so they will need root pruning etc in the Spring. Right now they are unpruned and hanging out near our bedroom windows, rather dominating.
