Mandevilla tree - Do I cut back branches bring inside overwinter?

Posted by lorc NJ (My Page) on

I was given mandevilla tree as a gift, I know NOTHING about plants. It's in 14" container, 5' high. I want to save it over the winter, it's beautiful. (Schultz liquid plant food every watering!) I read to cut back branches - is this true? If so, how much to cut off? I can't bring inside house, infested with ants. Can I keep tree in attached (unheated) garage over winter (northern NJ)? Do I keep it watered over the winter? Thanks for Help!

First, do you mean hibiscus?? Mandavillas are usually vines.
If it's a tropical hibiscus, here's a site that has lots of great info for you.
Now that I think about it, mandavillas are about as tender as tropical hibiscus and I know people have overwintered both in garages.
Good luck!
