Rose of sharon starts

I was just given several very small rooted starts of ROS. I plan to use them at the side of our yard but it is grassy and I don't want to have them accidently mowed off or lost to the winter weather.

The only ideas I have come up with are: 1) plant them in a large container and winter them over in the basement, or 2) plant them in a flower bed for the winter.

They were given to me by the family of a friend who recently passed away so these plants are rather special to me.

I am in zone 5.

I suggest overwintering inside. They will probably go dormant, so they will just be sticks, but don't overwater and they should pull through.

I'd put them into 1 gallon pots in the spring and let them grow into that before I planted them out next summer.
