Hardy & Easy Hibiscus for Houston

Planning to buy my first hibiscus to put in the ground in the front yard, which gets lots of sun, and will be watered every couple days with my dripper system. I like the more tropical varieties (like the look better than the mallow's like Texas Star), and have seen "Brilliant" Red listed as quite hardy (surviving most Houston cold events) and easy to grow with lots of blooms.

That said, I am seeing "The President" red hibiscus at Lowe's and wonder if it will be significantly different? Is it worth hunting down a Brilliant, or will I be just as happy with the Lowe's version?? Or am I missing the boat completely, and should be looking for something alltogether different???

Thanks!

Brad

If you plan on planting it in the ground and don't want to have to cover it in winter and worry about losing it in a hard freeze or if you pot it up and don't want the hassle of bringing it inside for the winter then I would avoid buying one whose tag says "tropical"
You might like either "Lord Baltimore" or "Flare". Both are hardy to Zone 5. They are recommended by Texas A & M for Texas. You can find pic's of both as well as other recommended plants at the link below.
