Pruning Hibiscuses

My hibiscuses in front of the house have grow to 4-5 feet in height. I wanted to keep them about 2-3 feet. What is the best way to do this and retain nice flowers?

What time of year can I prune? How much can I cut off?

When and what type of fertilizer should I use. Thanks

Depending on variety 4'-5' is a maintainable height for tropical hibs. 2-3 feet is going to be tough on you and the plant as a general rule. Major pruning like that will weaken the plants long-term and will have 2-3 month gaps between blooming wood becoming available. A general 3-1-2 ratio fert with micros usually will work well for most hibs. Might do a 1-1-1 once a year depending on soil anaysis for your area of Florida. Extra magnesium can be added with epsom salts if you don't seem to have good green colored leaves and have been ferting regularly with above types of ferts. Now might be a better time to prune as most hibs slow flowering in winter, so you won't sacrifice so many blooms now as you would waiting until spring.
    Good Luck and Happy Growing.
