Help! Hibiscus branches splitting

I've found a couple of small branches split off and lying on the ground here and there under the plant, plus all of the leaves are being eaten off the lower branches. i'm guessing this is due to some type of bug, but could that be causing the problems with the woody stems too? and can I just spray with insecticidal soap to treat? thanks for any advice!

Need to find the culprit before you take out the big guns.

Sounds more like larger critters. Perhaps dog? squirrel? cat?
