It's hibisco. I'm deferring to the use in proper Spanish according to the Academia Real. Hibiscus, too for many avid, well-educated educated gardeners I know in Mexico.

There are many names all over Latin America, and generally all based on mistaken identities. Rosa, or, Flor de Jamaica specifically is the name reserved for the Florida Cranberry, Hibiscus sabdariffa, the edible African species, at one time a crop in Florida for tea and Jam, known as the Roselle Britain and in the Caribbean. The British brought it to Central America and it was simply the Rose from Jamaica, later, when roses became more widespread, simply the Flower from Jamaica. It was brought to Mexico and Central America from Jamaica around 1800. It was in the Bahamas earlier, and likely came to Florida from there before being widespread in Tabasco and Central America. In Africa the leaves of sabdariffa are a edible green.

The ornamental species of Hibiscus, Chinese type that is now more popular in Florida is simply hibisco, or even hibiscos, properly, just like in English, though Hibiscus would still be a better bet IMO. However in the North and East of Mexico it is known as the Tulipan (Tulip), and on the West coast by something else. As noted, Cuba and some other scattered countries call it the amapola (not armapola, amapola = poppy like the Julio Iglesias song), but just like the confusion in Mexico with Tulips it is simply a case of ignorance of the correct name and the appropiation of the closest name around, as these plants were brought to the colonies by the Europeans.

Hope this helps. Botanists call the ornamental Hibisco from UNAM, but I have a running feud with a nice lady who has some in her Garden in North Central Mexico, who insists it's a Tulipan. But she never learned how to write on the ranch she's from, and and she's older than I am, so Tulipan Tulip it is ;-)
