When I was in Honduras everyone referred to hibiscus as "la flor de Jamaica." Jamaica is pronounced hah-my-kah in spanish by the way.

In Costa Rica the hibiscus flower is called Armapola.......but that name is used for poppy in other part
If you google Armapola pictures of .... you'll get pictures of hibiscus

NO, LA FLOR DE AMAPOLA ES OTRA Y LA TRADUCEN DE LAS "POPPIES". SI LE DICEN FLOR DE JAMAICA ES ACERTADO TAMBIEN, PORQUE CUANDO SE SECA PARECE JAMAICA SECA. EL NOMBRE QUE YO SIEMRPE HE SABIDO ES HIBISCO TAMBIEN.

interesting. if you google "amapola" you get poppies, but if you google "amapola flowers" you get hibiscus. "Armapola" turns up some yellow hibiscussy-flowers, too.

That is interesting! I guess that's why the scientific names exist, so it wouldn't be room for confusion, they are just so hard to learn.
