| Aloha,
Anyone have any luck with growing nectarines in Hawaii? We are at 2100' elevation and it may get to 50 degrees, possibly high 40s, in the winter here. If anyone has had luck, please let me know the variety and where to get it if known.
Mahalo

Most varities need 600 to 900 hours of winter chill (45 degrees or lower). Low Chill varities might bear at your elevation. I am at 1700 ft and peaches don't bare in my neighbors yard. Maybe two or three a year. Peaches and Nectarines have the same requirment. Artic Star, is one of the best white nectarines for a mild-winter area. Gold Mine, Panamint, Silver Lode, Snow Queen and Sunred are all listed as low chill requirment Nectarines in the Western Garden Book. LOL Phil

The following site lists requirments for "Arctic Star" www.digitalseed.com/gardener/fruit/nectarine.html Anumber of nurseries in California have 'Arctic Star'. None mention shipping to Hawaii. Always a problem. Try a Google Search for 'Arctic Star Nectarine' and call some of the nurseries about shipping if you are still interested. Nothing comes up for Nectarines in Hawaii. Phil

Hi there...im from Singapore and the weather well..would be similar to Hawaii. Errm...u guys are way above sea level and not much luck with growing nectarines. Guess theres no peach variety that could grow without those chill hours? Minimum temp. here is 22 degrees Celcius...though it would be more like late 20s...during these monsoon season. Any chance i could grow a peach tree here? :(

I think the chill index is based on hours between 32 and 45 Fahrenheit during the dormancy period. If my conversion routine is correct, that would be between 0 and 7.22 Celsius. At our elevation in Hawaii, 2100 feet or 640 meters, we are in a borderline area getting as low as 8.8 Celsius or about 48 F. I found a Nectarine with a >100 chill index called Desert Delight. Any comments on this variety would be welcome. You might want to check out this link: http://www.digitalseed.com/gardener/fruit/1chill.html

I live in Honolulu. Hardly any chill here, but for the past two years I have gotten peaches from my three year old Florida Prince peach tree. Because of this I have just recently purchased a Desert Delight Nectarine and a Methley Plum tree. Bought them at Koolau Farmer's. Bought the Florida Prince at Star Market. I suggest you plant the Florida Prince Peach and the Desert Delight Nectarine they are both proven warm winter fruit bearers.

I guess now that I have moved to Oregon I should look into growing them here. Thanks for all the comments.
