Where can I buy vegetable starters on the windward side?

I am planting my first vegetable garden in Hawaii (I have done vegetable gardens in Australia before) and as I'm new to the gardening community here I am having the hardest time finding vegetable starters. The local nurseries only seem to carry herbs, tomatoes and eggplants - and even those are in limited quantities and though the herbs seem healthy enough the tomatoes and eggplants are very sad looking.
Does anyone know where I can get healthy vegetable starters for my vegetable garden? I would grow them from seeds but have rotten luck with that!

| I've never been to any store in Hawaii with a wide variety of vegetable starters. Besides those you mentioned, there's occasionally squash or lettuce. You might consider buying a few packets of seeds with a local brand, such as Fukuda Seed Co., because they select the varieties that are most likely to grow well in Hawaii. Garden shops usually carry at least one local brand. The seeds will probably grow if you just sprinkle them on the ground that you've prepared and raked them over a bit to get them covered. Kailua rains a lot, so you might not even have to even water them, especially in the winter. |

| Windward gardening can be fun but challenging!! Fukuda has its own small seed store in Honolulu. The seeds are great and about half price at the store and they are very nice. Koolau Farmers in Kaneohe and Kailua both have UH seeds and Fukuda. UH has a great website with good seeds for the area. Just look up CTAHR on google and you can order them very cheaply with no postage. Most seed catalog seeds do not do well here (I have learned the hard way!). Southern Exposure is one good one that is aimed at the mid-atlantic but much of the weather is similar (High humid hot summers and variable rain). Hope this helps. Best of luck! |
