Today, at a plant trade show in Florida, I saw that the Brighamia is being propagated by tissue culture and will be released for sale in March or April.
This is great news, especially for Brighamia rockii, which appears to be less commom in culture than B. insignis. For several years I was giving out quite a bit of seed from my 10+ year old B. rockii. The plant was about 4 1/2 feet tall and flowered at least twice a year in most years. It was producing more seed than I could use and was giving it to local native plant growers. A couple of years ago, some critter stung the stem in a area that I did not notice and the upper third rotted. Even though I applied fungicide and took all measures possible to save it, eventually the entire plant died. One of the saddest chapters in my native Hawaiian plant growing career. Aloha http://www2.hawaii.edu/~eherring/hawnprop/bri-rock.htm PS I will try to send you an e-mail with pics of my plant.
