Ficus carica -common fig

elder

At present there is a discussion underway in the Fig Forum concerning raising fig trees in tropical areas. The debate centers around whether or not the common fig tree (Ficus carica) needs a certain number of hours of cold or cool temperatures (45 degrees F) in order to put it into a dormant stage which is needed for it to grow and produce fruit. I am quite sure that Hawaii is a tropical area, so does anyone on this forum grow the common fig for its fruit? We need to know what varieties do well in tropical climates, if they need to be planted at higher elevations in order to be forced into the dormant stage, or if they grow and produce without going through dormancy. It would be helpful and interesting to learn of any large-scale fig plantings on the islands, also.

Most of the information we are getting is rather academic, or from people who are somewhat removed from the circumstance under discussion. We really need to hear the facts from people actually involved, and any additional contacts, such as Hawaii Agricultural Agencies or Botany Depts at Universities on the islands would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for any light you might shed on the subject.....Elder
