| Aloha,
My names Dave, Im an 18 year old entomology/photography student living on the Garden Island. I was wondering if anyone on Kauai, I know there will be some, are having problems with caterpillars on their plants? Im just looking for sources for some new species to add to my collection, and I thought this would be a good idea.
If you're on Kauai and have some pests you'd like identified, please shoot me an email, and Ill do my best to help you identify it, rear it, etc. Most people just pluck the pillars off and kill them, I would never, hope there are others out there, lol. Im looking in particular for caterpillars on Mamaki, Oleander, Tomato, or Crown Flower(Monarch butterflies!)
Mahalo nui loa in advance for your info and help,
Aloha and all the best,
~Dave K.N.

Know a pasture in Omao that has thistle plants and some oleander with choke caterpillars on them. The kids collect lots of caterpillars and I always have to tell them to put them back so they will live. Contact me to see. Also please post picture of endemic butterfly and caterpillar so we know them. How do we contact you to ID bugs ? Mark

Dave, My Mamaki plant is going to seed now. The seeds whould be ready in about three weeks to a month. At that time I can mail seeds to you on Kauai. They will have to be inspected by the state but that should not be a problem.

I have seeds for the Mamaki and also have some very small plants (about 1/8" tall). If you get to Oahu, I can provide or can mail seeds to you, if you send me your address.

Howzit, Sorry for some reason it wont send me notification when I get a new message, just found that out so I had no idea I had responses XD Aight, well if you guys can shoot me an email ( Mantidave@gmail.com ) Id much appreciate it. Shoot me an email if ya can take pictures of the bugs for ID, Pueokai, cant guarantee an ID but I can try. I also have a contact or two in the DoA that might be able to gimme an idea or two if its a pest or something like that. Im on West shore, but just knowing the little buggers are there helps alot =/ By the time ya get back to me Ill be able to send you some info and links to the endemic species, the names, if ya can find much info online, are; Kamehameha Butterfly(Vanessa tameamea) and Blackburn(s) Hairstreak(Not sure of the scientific) Hmm, dont really go to Oahu much, but mail might work if its not a problem =/ Never sent anything back n forth between islands, I didnt even know you needed to have it inspected for inter-island (or maybe thats just the particular plant?) Thanks though, thats a good thing to know! So shoot me an email if ya'd be so willing, and Ill get back to you individually, easier for me to keep track of the info =p Aight everyone, thanks for the info n help, hope to chat atcha later! Aloha and all the best, ~Dave
