Barren hibiscus

I grow many hibiscus plants on the windward side of Oahu and have great success with them. However, I have one hedge of 11 plants and the last two on one end are pitiful. They have been in the ground 3 years and are 6 feet tall and did well the first 18 months. A year ago they lost most of their leaves and those few that do grow back are small and sparse, and the flowers are quite small. I've increased and decreased water, fertilizer, ironite and epsom salts, all to no avail. Any suggestions on what else to try?

| Hi Mike, That sounds like what happened to our hibiscus hedge, which is much smaller. Our hedge is between 4 and 5 feet tall, and only about 6 plants. A couple of the plants on the end closest to the street lost lots of their leaves. The grow back is smaller and sparser. We tried almost the same strategies except the epsom salts. The hibiscus very slowly seems to be getting better, but I don't know why. We live in hot, dry Kaimuki. |
