What is your favorite nursery on the Big Island...?

Aloha,

Well this is my first visit to this forum....pretty cool! I am off to visit my dad next week, he lives on the Big Island (Kona area). I am planning on visiting some of the gardens - but I also want to visit some fun nurseries (hoyas, tropicals, etc...) - even better if they sell some plants that are certified to come back to California with me. Any suggestions? What are your favorites? Thank you, Alicia

PlantItHawaii has certified tropical fruit trees for sale.

Pacific Coast Tropical Gardens has lots of different kinds of unusual certified tropicals.

Both places are just south of Hilo.

Here is a link that might be useful: Pacific Coast Tropical Gardens

Hawaiian Gardens at the intersection of Palani and Mamalahoa highway has a lot of plants and are authorised to ship.

I like Sunrise Nursery, next to home depot. Margo does not have plants cleared to ship.

I use Walmart, Lowes and Home Depot for good prices.

Akatsuka Orchid Gardens on the highway between Hilo and Volcano. Lots of Orchids and they will be glad to ship. Tour busses stop there.

Plant it Hawaii is one of the biggest for fruit trees. They are wholsale, so you have to call ahead. 966-6633

Lots of small nurseries. Mostly on the Hilo side. Let me know if you want more nursuries or more information.\

Thank you Cagary and Kona Phil. I really appreciate the suggestions. Typically when I go to the smaller islands the first thing that I do is get my hands on the yellow pages and call around, and of course stop everywhere that I pass that is selling plants - I have found some treasures this way (surprising how many places are certified). But since the Big Island is so big I figured it was going to be easy to miss some good nurseries. We are going to the Big Island Nurserymen's sale on Friday and shop for my father's landscape, so I might find some leads there too.
Well, thank you again, Alicia :0)
