The hawaiian strawberry and raspberry both grows best at higher elevations. We're talking 3500 to 6000 feet; they like cool air. I'm reading that there is one indiginous species and one endemic subspecies of strawberry, both found on Big Island and Maui. Grow them from stolons that have developed roots. Akala doesn't seem to be native to Oahu either. They can be grown from seed. Alaka berries are actually very bitter and tart with a bad aftertaste. The really ripe ones are best but not great.

They shouldn't be invasive, and be my guest at trying to grow them. Check the laws before transporting plants or seed from other islands.

Aloha Kuinut- The akala is rather bitter, and is not worth bothering with in my opinion. I have seen the strawberry up at Bird Park, in Volcano. Also, recently we got a load of mulch and one of them came up in it, it is now growing in the shade in very little soil. It hasn't flowered yet though. As for invasive, the vines tend to be, but not the strawberries.

Thanks! I'm actually growing alpine strawberries right now... well, sorta. they're still seedlings. I am hoping to visit the Big Island soon, so hopefully I can see some of the Hawaiian strawberries there. Thank you both for the insight though!
