I have grown Okinawan sweet potatoes in Makawao and now in Nanakuli, but only on open ground. They will spread as far as they can and root wherever they can. To contain them you must cut them back. Unfortunately, if you cut them back they are unlikely to grow many tubers. I would not recommend it for a container, unless you like the tops, which can be eaten like spinach. Then you don't care if it makes potatoes.

i'm trying to grow them again this year. last year the 3 i bought from the grocery store didn't sprout at all. i just planted 3 small tubers yesterday in one of my raised beds.

i've planted regular orange colored sweet potatoes in the past and if you want more tubers, you can cut off 8-10" sections of the vines and stick them in the ground (or another pot) to propagate more potato plants.
