Houseplant I.D. from Hawaii

Hi, I received from a friend a few yrs. ago a rather large, corn like plant. It had sword-shaped leaves that were serrated on the edges, rather sharp!! It got too big, I just couldn't make it live anymore. I was in Maui 4yrs. ago and saw it growing there. I harvested some offshoots from the side of the plant, growing out of the side of the trunk and have them rooting in water. Help!! I would love to know the name and how to take better careof the "babies."

Could be a halaconia of some kind. Try posting a picture through picturebucket.com.

No, checked it out on the web and definitely not a halaconia. The leaves on the plant I had were swordlike, very thin but flat. Thanks!

The flat, sharp edged leaves and side shoots you describe sounds like a type of Pandanus, maybe Hala or I'e I'e. If that's what it is, probably better out of water and in moist potting mix.

That's it, I'm pretty sure of it!! Found some pics on the web. So, it would like to be kept moist? I planted the offshoots I kept in a pot with regular potting mix. Any other info. would be appreciated. I don't think they like direct sun. I put the former huge plant in the sun for awhile, inside, and it hated it.
Thanks!

Hala is tough, growing in saltspray and full sun, with 4 ft. leaves, so I'm assuming the plant you have is I'e I'e. (Freycinetia) I have I'e I'e growing wild on my land in the Puna rainforest. The conditions are warm, moist, well drained, shady. The plants wind around the Ohia trees and can reach 40 feet. If it gets old enough and large enough it will bloom with large red-orange flowers.

Thank you. I wish I wouldn't have gotten rid of the big one I had. I will take care of these "babies" and hope they get big one day. I'm getting obsessed with tropical plants, my sister lives in Florida and has some beautiful plants. I can put these types of plants outdoors in the summer, it is hot here then, but have to bring them inside in the winter. I'm fascinated by all of your beautiful plants there in Hawaii too, our daughter was married in Maui 4 yrs ago and it was so beautiful. My sister just gave me Plumeria cutting too, hope they do well.
thanks again
