Kona Coffee...self Pollinating?

Posted by cactusrequiem Zone 8 SC (My Page) on

Hello,
I have a three year old, Kona Coffee tree. I know I won't get "actual" Kona Coffee growing it here in Charleston SC, but it is fun to try. My question...The plant is flowering like crazy, but nothings seems to be setting fruit. I have read where Arabica is self pollinating, does Kona need a cross pollinator? Or is my tree just too young yet and it likes to flower? It seems to be VERY happy, like I said, lots of flowers and flushing new growth constantly. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Darren

RE: Kona Coffee...self Pollinating?

Aloha Darren,

It is self pollinating, but it needs a pollinator such as a bee to move the pollen around. Sometimes we have small flies that pollinate the coffee, sometimes it is the bees. I suppose you could get a small paintbrush and pretend to be a bee?

A hui hou,
Cathy
